What Is a Typing Speed Test?
Type the displayed sentences exactly as shown and measure how fast and accurately you can type. You get both your speed and your error rate in one run.
Speed is reported in KPM (keys per minute); divide by five for an approximate WPM (words per minute), the standard unit for English typing.
For anyone who writes on a computer daily, typing speed converts directly into saved time. Even a modest improvement compounds meaningfully over a working day.
Typing Speed Benchmarks
Watch accuracy alongside speed. Fast but sloppy typing loses its advantage to constant corrections — in practice, speed only counts when accuracy stays at 95% or above.
| KPM (keys/min) | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 100 | Entry | Still hunting for keys by sight |
| 100-200 | Beginner | Starting to type without looking |
| 200-300 | Intermediate | Comfortable for any office work |
| 300-400 | Advanced | Typing at the speed of thought |
| 400+ | Elite | Competitive typing territory |
How to Type Faster
Anchor the Home Row
Left hand on A-S-D-F, right hand on J-K-L-; — that is your base. The bumps on F and J let your fingers find home without looking. Returning there after every word keeps finger travel minimal.
Stop Looking at the Keyboard
You will be slower at first, but once your fingers memorize the layout, speed takes off. Increase your eyes-on-screen time a little each day. As long as the habit of glancing down remains, you will hit a ceiling.
Attack Your Weak Keys
Most people stumble on pinky keys and the number row. Note where you trip up during tests, then drill words containing those characters for efficient gains.
- Prioritize accuracy over speed — fewer mistakes ends up faster
- Five minutes daily beats thirty minutes once a week
- Adjust your chair so your elbows sit at roughly 90 degrees
- Don't slam keys to the bottom; release at the actuation point
